GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
|||
Tamoxifen and its metabolite 4-hydroxytamoxifen are nonsteroidal selective
estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) which mimic the action of estrogen in
cardiovascular system and skeletal system. It blocks estradiol-stimulated VEGF
production in breast tumor and acts as an anti-estrogen and antineoplastic in
breast tissue; used in the palliative treatment of breast cancer in
postmenopausal women and to stimulate ovulation in infertility. The chemical
designation of tamoxifen is
(Z)-2-[4-(1,2-diphenyl-1-butenyl) phenoxy]-N,N- dimethylethanamine. The trans form
is active. The citrate salt of tamoxifen is a white to off-white crystalline
powder; insoluble in water; freely soluble in glacial acetic acid; slightly
sobuble in alcohol, acetone; oral antiestrogen.
